ALERION EXPRESS
ALERION EXPRESS SAILS INTO UK WATERS
"Day sailing" is a phrase commonly used to describe sailing in small boats which are neither cruisers nor racers. A company in the United States found that interpretation limiting and set about to offer "day sailers" which could do both without impairing their ability to deliver peerless daysailing.
That company is Pearson Composites, builder for quite a number of brands, including J/Boats, True North, PDQ and the U.S. Naval Academy's fleet of 44-footer offshore sloops. And their answer is Alerion Express, a line of traditional and attractive 20 to 45 foot sloops now represented in the UK by S.D. Marine at Hamble.
Pearson Composites makes the distinction that they are focused on "Alerion Sailing" - a much richer experience than simply daysailing. That's because Alerion Express boats are fast enough to race, simple enough to welcome aboard sailing companions with any level of skill (or lack of it!), be able to get underway in minutes, be laid out for single handed sailing, and be capable and safe in conditions ranging from mere zephyrs of breeze to a real blow.
While the above-waterline appearance of each Alerion Express is classically traditional, these boats are full of surprises, many the result of the fertile imagination of the design team at Pearson. The underwater shape of each model is thoroughly modern as is the sail plan, with a self-tacking jib boom, fully roached (and battened) mainsail, carbon fibre spars and, with the 33-foot and larger models, electric winches.
Alerion Express boats in all their sizes are naturally quick under sail, since no rating rules were ever considered during their development. A growing number of Alerion Express owners have gone racing against fleets of conventional cruiser/racers, and caused consternation that boats without spinnakers, crewed by novices or just a few people, could acquit themselves so well at the finish line.
What the builders savour more highly, however, is that Alerion Express owners are doing more sailing - just for the pure pleasure these boats bring. Not having to line up crews, wait for only perfect conditions, or set hard-to-manage sails makes going out, even if just for an hour's sail, so much more appealing.
The popularity of Alerion Express has much to do with today's busier lifestyle, the lack of leisure time, and the need to take one's pleasure in shorter periods of time. In the States, Alerion Express is selling at increasing volume whilst the rest of that market is in decline.
The emphasis on "Alerion Sailing" means boats with larger, sit-in cockpits, very comfortable ergometrics, all lines led aft, and a low coachroof for splendid visibility. Accommodations below are deliberately minimal by US
standards: a small galley, adequate berths, modest stowage - all the essentials but not fitted out for a month-long cruise. Of course, the 38 and 45 foot models are more elaborate below, but not to be confused with a floating home.
Pearson Composites is the original site for SCRIMP manufacturing, so Alerion Express profits from outstanding fibreglass work. Unlike so many production boats, where beautiful wood trim has been replaced by metal or plastic, Alerion Express trims each model handsomely, so they are a pleasure to see.
And, exchange rates make these boats a most attractive bargain.
